Kapala necklaces or bracelets are skulls that traditionally represented death in Tibet. Buddhists incorporated Tibetan skull beads into malas to represent the impermanence of life and the limits of human knowledge. Skull-shaped mala beads help chanters reflect upon the inevitability of death and the necessity of embracing lives filled with compassion. When it comes to the sacred Yak bone jewelry used in their Buddhist traditions, the rules are strict: the animals must die of natural means. This is because the negative karma that is created from slaughtering the animal outweighs the positive effects of spiritual engravings of mantras such as Om Mani Padme Hum.
